The Picture Room contains some of Sir John Soane’s most treasured works of art, including masterpieces by Hogarth, Canaletto, Turner and Piranesi. Soane used moving ‘picture planes’ to allow him to hang a small byfoot room with paintings, a collection large enough for a room three times its size.   A Harlot’s Progress was the first of Hogarth’s “Modern Moral Subjects”, however, the original paintings were lost in a fire in Fortunately, engravings had been produced of the series, saving it from falling into obscurity. The series consists of six scenes that tell the story of the protagonist “M. Hackabout” and her fall from grace.

The Rake’s Progress is a masterpiece by one of the 20th Century’s greatest composers and is a piece that will intrigue you musically, while compelling you . An exhibition demonstrating the use of the same theme by two artists more tan two centuries apart, Hogarth’s eight engravings were published in and have enjoyed wide success at the time and since, inspiring other treatments including the Auden/Stravinsky opera whose production at Glynebourne was set by David Hockney.
